The impact of design research: harbouring unrealistic expectations.
One of design research' failures is to mistake lack of immediate commercial and societal impact for failure. The ever stronger call for academia to solve current problems really bugs me. What's more, even academia itself is starting to believe it can have immediate impact. In my experience, for new design research work to be adopted into the mainstream takes around 20-30 years. Product success hinges on so many factors, a working process or demonstrator is just one of them. Once you have shown a first concept it may take decades more for all planets to be in alignment.
