“It is better to be a flamboyant failure than any kind of benign success.” That is what Malcolm McLaren said he learnt at art school. Design research may have failed in lots of ways but genuinely magnificent failures are few and far between. Design’s strength lies in it’s ability to take creative risks but research seems to make even the most confident designer insecure in their abilities to fail brilliantly. So for the next 50 years of design research I hope we can embrace failure as our friend and ally. If not, design research may need to go back to art school.
